The 2017 Hyundai Sonata Reinvents the Midsize Sedan

In a world where crossovers have hypnotized consumers, there’s still life in the midsize sedan market. Case in point: The 2017 Hyundai Sonata. Well-equipped and spacious, the new Sonata delivers the goods and doesn’t disappoint, proving that sedans can once again rule the road. Read on to see why our Hyundai dealership in Blue Springs is so in love with the newest Sonata, and you might just fall in love, too.

6 Distinct Hyundai Sonata Flavors

The ’17 Sonata is available in six delicious trims: SE, Eco, Sport, Sport 2.0T, Limited, and Limited 2.0T.

The base Sonata SE is equipped with a peppy 2.4L four-cylinder engine that produces 185 horsepower. This model also comes with the following standard features:

  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Heated mirrors
  • Rear spoiler
  • Automatic headlights
  • 60-40 split-folding rear seat
  • Rearview camera
  • 7-inch touchscreen (with Blue Link telematics)
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • HD satellite radio
  • USB and AUX inputs
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Move up the line toward the Sonata Eco and owners are rewarded with LED daytime running lights, partial leather trimmings, an eight-way power driver’s seat, and side mirrors with turn indicators. The Eco features a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-4 that makes 178 hp and comes mated to a standard seven-speed automatic transmission.

The Sonata Sport is fitted with the standard 2.4L engine and shares the Eco’s features, as well as upgraded 17-inch alloy wheels, sporty exterior styling, and dual chrome-tip exhaust ports. Opt for the Value package and the Sonata Sport sports a sunroof, hands-free trunk (a class-exclusive feature), heated seats, keyless ignition and entry, and additional leather upholstery.

Sport 2.0T models include 18-inch alloy wheels, bolstered sports seats, aluminum-encased pedals, a flat-bottom steering wheel, paddle shifters, quad exhaust, and an improved suspension system. A turbo 2.0L four-cylinder engine powers this Sonata with its maximum 245 horsepower.

The Limited Sonata swaps out the Sport’s athletic aesthetic with a sophisticated two-tone appearance, adding LED taillights, wood-grain trims, six-way power passenger seat, dual-zone climate controls, and rear vents. It is also equipped with the 2.4-liter engine.

At the top sits the Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0T. Fitted with the same turbo-four engine found in the Sport 2.0T, the Limited 2.0T packs even more of a wallop thanks to the following features:

  • 18-inch wheels
  • Panoramic sunroof (a funroof, as we like to say)
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Xenon headlamps
  • Automatic high-beam lights
  • Driver seat memory settings
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Rear sunshades
  • Infinity sound system with nine speakers
  • 8-inch touchscreen

A Classy Interior for a Classy Car Owner

Passenger and cargo volume is a strength; the cabin is as spacious and comfortable as heck, providing enough rear legroom for NBA centers and kiddos alike. Storage compartments are spread throughout the cabin to keep disorder to a minimum. And with 16.3 cubic feet of trunk space—a capacity that is far above the class average—you’ll have plenty of room to pack for a road trip.

The center stack offers a clean layout with all the important knobs, dials, and doo-dads within the driver’s reach. The standard seven-inch touchscreen looks crisp and bright, while the upgraded eight-inch screen makes navigation a breeze thanks to its uncluttered yet dynamic interface.

It’s All About the MPGs, Baby

The 2017 Hyundai Sonata won’t blow a pure EV out of the water, but with some impressive EPA ratings, it’s certainly besting its rivals. Sonata models fitted with the 2.0L turbocharged engine are rated at 26 mpg combined, while models equipped with the 2.4L engine return an estimated 29 mpg combined. The Sonata Eco is the best fuel-sipper of the bunch, achieving a combined 31 mpg.

Safety for All

Safety tech turns this traditional sedan into a modern one. In addition to the standard rearview camera, all Sonata trims come with antilock brakes, traction control, driver knee airbags, and side curtain airbags. Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system (also standard) includes roadside assistance, crash response, remote lock controls, and parental monitoring. Blind-spot alerts and rear cross-traffic warning systems, lane departure warning, auto forward collision and emergency brake, and parking assist are optional or standard features across the lineup.

The 2017 Sonata has also been awarded a five-star rating by the NHTSA.
